In a quiet, unassuming neighborhood in the foothills of the Santa Catalina mountains sits a small jewel of a home. One of the Southwest's leading interior designers created this as her own residence and lived here for more than a decade.
The home has been featured on both the Opera League's home tour and in the pages of Tucson Lifestyle magazine. Recently totally refurbished, this beautiful property is available as a vacation rental.
Though only 1600 square feet, the clever design makes the house seem much larger. Using the concept of a New York loft apartment as the inspiration, the master bedroom is separated from the living areas by a travertine and mirrored, dual-sided, fireplace.
To the right is the master bathroom with large, walk in, shower. On the other side, a small sitting alcove features floor to ceiling views into a natural desert arroyo. Here, it is not unusual to see members of the desert community -gambel quail, cardinals, javelina and bob-cats- as one sips morning coffee. Adjacent, is an enormous walk in closet.
The great room contains a formal sitting area with two comfortable down filled couches in front of the fireplace, while on the opposite wall a 42 inch projection TV is set up with satellite, VCR, DVD with surround sound, CD and am/fm radio. A well designed compact kitchen features black granite counter-tops, European whisper quiet dishwasher and integrated, smooth top, oven.
Adjacent to the front entry way is a dining area and beyond this, a smaller seating area for relaxing with a drink and a book. Through double doors a second bedroom with double bed is suitable for overnight guests. A second, full bath is accessed from this room and the living areas.
A private, out-door courtyard can be reached from both the living and the guest rooms. Again, clever design has turned a small area into a relaxing outdoor retreat: a soothing fountain runs down rocks, a metal sculpture echoes the many armed saguaro cactus on the near-by hills and this area is bathed in sunlight much of the day.
Despite the peace and serenity of the location, within five minutes walk is a comprehensive shopping center with supermarket, drug-store, two specialty bakeries, three dry cleaners and five restaurants! Within a five mile radius lie some of the Southwest's most prestigious resorts, each with their own multi-star restaurant: Loews Ventana Canyon, the Westin La Paloma, Hacienda Del Sol.
For the nature lover, Sabino Canyon recreation area is just a mile away to the east. Here, trails into Catalina State Park range from easy to challenging. For the golfer, the famous Trent designed Ventana Country Club 36 hole course, is literally "just up the road."
